Odds Are's Recap of the 449 Room Show

February 16th, 2006

Thursday night was our first performance at the 449 Room. We were the only band booked for the night, which was cool for us since it meant basically a huge amount of time to play. We had another good crowd, lots of tickets sold, despite the fact that it was a Thursday night, so once again we are incredibly appreciative to our fans. You guys rock!

Since we had never been in the 449 Room before, we had no idea what the place was like. We walked in and found that the stage is actually right in front of the window, so it almost feels like you're the window display for the evening, which is kind of cool! Some of the photographs we took from the evening actually look like we just set up Bang Bang's drumset in the middle of the street and let him play there.

The room was a good size, but not too big, so only vocals were running through the PA. Things were going well and we were ready to go, until we realized that the keyboard was not working. We didn't bring an amp for it since we usually just run it through the PA. Something wasn't right... The sound guy was running back and forth making adjustments, changing cables, and we weren't able to figure out it. That was the first bad experience of the evening... The final result was that we put the keyboard through Jaime's guitar amp, which sounded pretty awful, and we lost about 40 minutes of the set since we couldn't start right away. So the first technical difficulty of the night was disheartening, but we kept on smiling and continued.

So we played through most of the first set fine, without any huge issues except that the monitors were humming back at us a bit. Seemed to be going well, the crowd was enthusiastic and we were having a good time.

Then we got to "I Want You To Want Me"... and musical tragedy occurs... Fairly early on in the beginning of the song, Bel breaks a string. So she's pretty much done for the song. The rest of the band plowed through as best as we could, and Morgan ran and grabbed the backup bass, but there was nothing we could do to save the bass part for that song.

We took a short break, gathered our thoughts and continued on for some fun covers. The audience didn't seem to be shaken one bit by all of our troubles, which was fantastic! By the end of the night people were still smiling and having a good time, and all of us were still smiling as well, so it seemed to work out.

So all in all it was an eventful night full of fun equipment failures and plenty of smiles from the band. The show had to go on, and it did, and people didn't seem to mind any of the issues we had, so that was definitely a good thing!

This was also a landmark show for us as well, as we debuted our new song, "Who I Am" for the audience. It seemed to go over well, I guess we'll have to see what everyone thinks as we continue playing it.

So aside from a bad keyboard sound, some slight humming, and a broken bass string, this was a decent night. The audience seemed to have a good time with us, and that's what matters most.

Thank you to the 449 Room for having us, and in particular thank you to Kevin, Nicholas, and Bret for everything. Thanks to Morgan, the best manager to ever walk the face of the planet! Somehow you always manage to keep these things running smoothly. Thanks to Michelle, for once again taking the time to help with all of the random tasks that come up throughout the evening, which in turn helps keep us sane as well. And of course, thanks to our INCREDIBLE audience, who always comes to support us and we love you guys!

So what's in store for the band now? Well, this weekend, Odds Are hits the recording studio for an updated demo with Bang Bang. And in less than two weeks, we'll be at the Saint in Asbury Park and then Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. Hopefully we'll see you at one of those shows!
